B= MARC TREVELYAN JONES
D= Dan Budden
Purification became the second release by the Powerage label following the Welsh band’s production and recording with David Prater who had worked with Dream Theatre before. The band had obtained its deal as a result of its 2005 self-titled demo. The line-up had existed since formation in 2000. Budden was out in 2008 however. The debut was picked up for North America by Candlelight USA and issued at the beginning of 2009.
LETHARGY – PURIFICATION – POWERAGE/CANDLELIGHT
The biography refers to ‘hard rock,’ but alas Lethargy is not the return of the sounds of L.A. Guns, Love/Hate or London. The group was discovered by Classic Rock magazine and signed to Powerage, yet this is mostly Pearl Jam and ilk in sound. Listeners will hear influences as diverse as Iron Maiden when hearing a particular riff and lead, rare instances of progressive changes, a doom wah and even the odd hard and heavy song like the opening number Stealth. The bulk of Purification is high-energy grunge and post-grunge middle-of-the-roadism that even fans of Nickelback might pick up on. Of course, as is the norm with bands of this caliber, a small label cannot push the band to superstardom. Instead, said independent label is probably banking on selling the rights to the band upon Purification’s discovery by a bigger entity. What Powerage and Candlelight can do for Wales’ Lethargy depends on the next step, as opposed to this one, but let me endorse the group’s songs and skilled musicianship for now in lieu of thrills or heaviness. – Anna Tergel
