Reviews SHADOW - SHADOW - SPIKEFARM/CENTURY MEDIA
The vocalist is a female?? Nearly impossible to guess without being informed at first, it is incredible that such an aggressive and throaty voice emanates from the larynx of a female. Tokiko Shimamoto certainly is the icing on the cake for Japan's Shadow who despite being formed some eight years ago have only now managed to release a debut courtesy of Finland's Spikefarm. Musically the band plays the kind of melodic/aggressive metal that In Flames have adopted for their use and it has to be said that they do it quite capably. It should not be a cause for surprise to see a Japanese band being influenced by the many bands who tour in the land of the rising sun. As tracks like Weep For The Sin, Breath Of Awakening and The Arrival Of The Last Quarter prove, Shadow is a tight and good-sounding metal band that has the potential to attract a fan base for itself. The band is very In Flames inspired which along with the odd Michael Schenker soloing often heard on the album needs to adopt a little more of its own personality. Yet, and should that come with time, Shadow is a well above average band that might be a good bet for you. - Ali "The Metallian"
